Yetis

Background lore for Cosmic Yetis

Yetis are the most primal of all the races on Crypton. Inherently magical they are mysterious, if somewhat brutish, but have hearts of gold. Nami, the Water Elemental, crafted the Yetis with water magic on Yeti Island and therefore Yetis have a strong affinity with it. Yetis are all large creatures with enormous strength and towering bodies. They are imposing figures but are often more scared of you than you are of them. Yetis are quite content to be solitary creatures living in the wilderness and adapt to their environments marvelously. However, they do congregate in the center of Yeti Island, where they have built a city of sorts.

At the heart of Yeti Island is the magical Mugu Mountain, one of the tallest and most frigid places on Crypton. Through the manipulation of their water magic, the Yetis have crafted an ice city at the mountain’s peak. It is a perilous journey up the steep slopes of the magical mountain to the Yeti city of Sakerhem. Yetis have a magical ability to adapt to their climate and are just as at home in the deserts of the south as they are in the snow and ice of the mountains. However, many Yetis have their preference for where they live and they tend to group this way in Sakerhem as well.

As kind as they are, most Yetis are rather shy and are able to teleport to escape any unwanted attention. They can even render themselves invisible when the situation calls for it. Sakerhem has a party-like atmosphere with constant feasting and merriment. The Yetis who gather here are more welcoming to outsiders than they are in the wild since any who have made it here have proven their worth by climbing the massive Mugu Mountain. Constant competitions involving feats of strength are common in Sakerhem, and for this reason the Yetis are most excited when Trolls or Apes make their way to the city. Other pastimes include figure skating, at which Yetis are surprisingly adept, and ice sculpting which unsurprisingly is dominated by the Ice Yetis.

Yeti Biomes

The following are the primary biomes and the yetis that can be found there:

Mountain Yeti

All Yetis are strong. However, Mountain Yetis will claim to be the strongest. They are certainly the tallest amongst their brethren which makes them expert climbers and mountaineers. They also use this strength for efficient mining of resources in difficult-to-reach places. Often gruff individuals with little to say, Mountain Yetis are difficult companions. However, if befriended, will be friends for life. Loyal and proud, they will stand by their friends through even the toughest of times. A common ritual when a Mountain Yeti declares friendship is to exchange handcrafted bracelets to affirm the bond. This also serves as a reminder of their friends when they are apart, and even when they are alone they are not truly alone. Mountain Yetis do not care about how they look, and often let their fur get very long and matted.

Cave Yeti

Cave Yetis will often go years without seeing another soul, and as such are not often seen at Sakerhem. Cave Yetis love to cultivate mushrooms and grow bioluminescent fungi underground. Their fur will often be thinner and darker than other Yetis, and if a visitor ever pokes their head in the Yeti’s cave, they will turn invisible until they leave. Tales of Cave Yetis extend right across Crypton and their footprints in the mud outside a cave cause quite a stir amongst hobby cryptozoologists. There are even rumors that some Yetis have adapted so much that their fur has taken on a green or purple bioluminescent quality as well. These are the rarest of all Yetis, and if they ever make an appearance in Sakerhem, they are well revered by the inhabitants there. Despite their name, Cave Yetis are perhaps the gentlest of all Yetis.

Forest Yeti

Masters of concealment, the Forest Yetis blend into their environment as naturally as the wind. These Yetis are the most attuned to nature and subconsciously invigorate the forest around them. Energized with the healing power of water, Forest Yetis act as healers for any who need it in the Medicine Hall at Sakerhem. Outside of the city, these Yetis make their home high up in the tallest trees of the forests. With their powers of camouflage, they hide their homes from view to maintain their solitude. Forest Yetis, however, are one of the few groups of Yetis to sometimes make themselves known to travelers. They have sometimes been sighted by hikers and adventurers in the depths of the woods. The Yeti would wave from the distance between the trees, and as soon as the adventurer focused on where they were, the Yeti would vanish.

Desert Yeti

Experts in energy conservation and heat distribution, Desert Yetis live in the desert in the island’s Southern region. A Desert Yeti will often use their affinity with water magic to create an oasis where they will often build a shack or hammock to relax in the heat. Desert Yetis are the most intelligent amongst all Yetis, and will spend their days practicing magic and reading books to gain other skills. Their fur has adapted to be the same tan colour as the sand of the desert, allowing them to hide much more easily in case of a rare traveler. A Desert Yeti can bury itself in the sand in a matter of seconds if the need arises, appearing as just a slightly raised mound of sand. As shy as Desert Yetis are, they will occasionally allow a weary traveler to rest at their oasis without revealing their presence at all.

Ice Yeti

The Ice Yetis make their home in and around the city of Sakerhem. Being by far the most social among Yetis, they encourage their Yeti brethren to engage with the community as much as possible. An Ice Yeti’s favorite pastime is sculpting, and many are supreme masters of the art. The main plaza of the city often has sculpting competitions for travelers to view and even participate in. Ice Yetis are not as shy as some others, and invite travelers of all kinds to take part in the ice sculpting. They will also sometimes build ice slides down the side of the Mugu Mountain and have sled races all the way to the bottom. Generous hosts, Ice Yetis will even give up their beds so that a traveler has a warm place to spend the night if all other accommodation is taken. Their fur is usually pure white, with the occasional blue spots around their faces.
